THE MANIFESTING PARADISE TAROT DECK
The Manifesting Paradise project came about in 2020. A year of uncertainty, fear, and confusion. I started creating images based on the tarot, in the midst of the pandemic, and amongst Black Lives Matter protests. It became my way to explore my desire to know that there is progress and beauty in the future.
The project has included original works on paper, video installations, tapestries, and a collaged mural exhibited in parts nationally in museums, galleries, art fairs, and even the streets of New York. And now, I’m excited that it culminates in a full deck, eventually available to everyone.
This deck looks to the future and is an exploration of the endurance, permanence, and resonance of symbols, imagery, ideas, and omens through generations. It includes 78 tarot cards including the 22 Major Arcana and the 56 Minor Arcana reimagined to reflect the perspective of a Black female protagonist harnessing the power of the elements.
The original images for each card were handmade using a combination of ink, oil pastels, and colored pencils on watercolor paper. The cards’ warm, lush colors evoke the allure of paradise and the fantasy of the tropics, a site of origin stories central to the Black diaspora. The imagery invites users to immerse themselves in a realm of vibrant colors and verdant imagery.
The Minor Arcana suits, Air, Water, Earth, and Fire, reflect how closely connected this deck is to the inherent knowledge of the natural world. As with a traditional deck, each suit has 10 number cards and 4 face cards. The face cards in this deck are identified through levels and types of knowledge: Student, Seeker, Sage, and Scholar.
Reading with the Manifesting Paradise Tarot Deck involves delving into its rich symbolism, the unique perspective, and the elemental energies. Interpret each card's symbolism, numerology, and elemental associations, while trusting your intuition, and ancestral knowledge to weave together a narrative of transformation, balance, and renewal.
